Defensive Mindset

“I WILL NEVER…” PART 1: CORE BELIEFS

A few months ago, I posted an article The Hard Questions – Gracie’s Fireside Chat. This article posed a handful of questions that every person should consider before they carry a gun, or expect to use one for defense. It was also a key article in my series on the defensive mindset. Today we continue the project of  asking ourselves tough questions so that we can continue to build our personal tactical doctrine.

My Sifu once told the whole class that our home work was to make an “I will never …” list.… Read the rest

A COP ESPOUSES CONCEALED CARRY

This is an excellent video about the importance of concealed carry. I would like to extend a thank you to Greg Willis for bringing this video to my attention.

Warning, this is a chilling video and can be very disturbing. It contains real audio footage of a murder.

This video is a great reminder that recorded 911 calls make excellent witnesses. Even if you can’t talk to the dispatcher, having one on the line to record the event audibly is a wise decision.… Read the rest

RAPE VICTIM TALKS ABOUT CONCEALD CARRY

Amanda Collins speaks out about the importance of the 2nd amendment right on college campuses.  Sadly, her story is not all that unique.  According to Crisis Connection Inc.: every 21 hours there is another rape on an American college campus. Amanda is fighting back against the anti-gun policies and legislation that have a hand in making these rapes possible. Way to go, Amanda! Packing Pretty backs you up 100%.

WHY WE TRAIN

This is a guest post I did for Train to Carry on why it is so important that we get proper training before carrying concealed.

All too often I hear of women who bought a handgun or received one as a gift, shot a few rounds through it (maybe they took a basic handgun course, maybe they didn’t) then they threw it in their purse and forgot about it. I think a great misconception is that if someone has/carries a firearm they are protected.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE UN-OFFICIAL “US MARINE CORPS RULES”

Un-Official U.S. Marine Corps Rules:

(Words in pink are Packing Pretty’s thoughts and comments)

1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

Be careful who you befriend. Most women are attacked by people who are known to them, friends even. RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) reports that 73% of sexual assaults were perpetrated by a non-stranger. I am the nicest girl in the world…until you try to hurt me or someone I love.

2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.Read the rest

EVERYTHING IS A WEAPON

One of my favorite concepts to bring up when I’m instructing women in self-defense is that just about EVERYTHING CAN BE USED AS A WEAPON. I don’t like to confine women’s minds into believing that a handgun is the only route to self-defense. Some women don’t want a gun, and other times, women who do have guns can’t always access them easily. That is why I teach my students to view everything as a potential tool to aid in their defense.… Read the rest

PACKING PRETTY’S POINTERS ON STAYING SAFE

This is a guest post I did for my friend Vanessa over at Mixed Martial Arts and Crafts. It’s about the importance of personal protection for women. I think it covers some very important points and is well worth a read!

PACKING PRETTY’S POINTERS ON STAYING SAFE | Mixed Martial Arts and Crafts

EVERY 2 MINUTES SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS SEXUALLY ASSAULTED

Knowing how and being capable of defending yourself are two separate things. Just because one has read up on and watched defense techniques does not make one proficient in them.

THE HARD QUESTIONS – GRACIE’S FIRESIDE CHAT

Consider this: every weekend I go out and teach a group of students how to defend themselves with a handgun. The problem is that no amount of hours on the range is going to wrap their heads around the idea of harming and possibly killing another human being. This is why every time I teach one of my Street Carry classes (an advanced class); I include a lesson called “The Fireside Chat”.  The point of this lesson is to get the students thinking about the nasty questions that they would rather not consider.… Read the rest

OKLAHOMA MOM KILLS INTRUDER

You all have probably already heard or read the story of the Oklahoma mom, 18, who shot when a couple armed men attempted a home invasion. One was found dead on the scene, the other arrested. While this is a great story, and the mother should be acknowledged for her bravery and quick thinking; we should not be surprised about this incident. After about four years of teaching firearms classes, (and my business partner’s several years more) we have come to the realization that when asked, women are more likely to be okay with shooting someone and possibly killing them then their male counterparts.Read the rest

YOUR PERSONAL TACTICAL DOCTRINE

Doctrine:

“The typical example is tactical doctrine in which a standard set of maneuvers, kinds of troops and weapons are employed as a default approach to a kind of attack.” – Wikipedia

In order to be effecient in self-defense, it is crucial to develope your own personal “Tactical Doctrine”. According to “Tactical Pistol Shooting” 2nd edition, there are three “keys” threat avoidance. These include:

  1. Street Smart:
  2. Threat Analysis
  3. Trade Craft

After studying the blurb following each key, I have decided to put their descriptions in my own words and terms.… Read the rest
